Introduction

When a loved one joins the navy relationships change as naval life presents new challenges and opportunities. Periods of separation and the joy of reunion, difficulties of communication and worries about death or injury effect those left behind differently.

Domestic arrangements also vary. Some choose to keep their home life separate from the navy as much as possible. Others live in naval married quarters - some even have the opportunity to accompany their family member overseas. A family association to the navy also brings opportunities to take part in a social life based around the naval messes as well as ceremonies such as the commissioning of a ship and royal events.

Despite the hardships naval life can bring many families are proud of their association to the navy and the achievements of their loved ones.
