Crew Wearing Rees Hall Escape Apparatus

Crew Wearing Rees Hall Escape Apparatus

A photograph of 13 crew members of the submarine HMS C7 wearing their Rees Hall escape apparatus, dating from the 1900s. The C class boats were the first to be fitted with lockers for stowing the gear and air locks but there was barely room for the crew and essential stores, let alone all the safety apparatus equipment. Moreover, since there were no internal bulkheads in the C class boats, flooding-up the boat to facilitate an escape would have been a lengthy and dangerous process. There is no record of the apparatus ever having been used.
