This officer's uniform belonged to a Sub-Lieutenant of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves (RNVR) and dates from 1943. The Royal Navy formed the RNVR in 1903 as a reserve of civilian volunteers. During World War Two RNVR officers found themselves in command of destroyers, frigates, landing craft and submarines, or as specialist navigation officers in cruisers and aircraft carriers.
