The operations of the Mediterranean Fleet

The defeat of France in 1940 and the entrance of Italy into the war created problems in the Mediterranean. The Royal Navy’s Mediterranean Fleet soon asserted its superiority over the Italians at sea and used the Island of Malta as a strategic base. From its airfields and harbour, Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm aircraft could attack enemy shipping carrying vital supplies to the Axis forces in North Africa.
