Suez

Naval aircraft aid the invasion of the Suez Canal in 1956

In July 1956 the Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser announced the Government’s decision to nationalise the Suez Canal Company. One of the first reactions was the assembly and despatch of three British Aircraft Carriers HMS Bulwark, HMS Theseus and HMS Ocean to join HMS Eagle in the Mediterranean.
