Learning from war
The Falklands War provided the Royal Navy with a unique advantage of having fought such a campaign, allowing them to gain unparalleled experience with their missile and electronic weapons systems.
The war also brought into stark contrast the practices of the Cold War and alerted the Royal Navy to the vital need to provide a versatile and long-reaching force.
The Ministry of Defence learnt the lessons of the Falklands War and decided to save the aircraft carrier fleet and the Navy’s amphibious warfare capabilities. Find out more about a few examples of how the Royal Navy was able to review its defence policy in light of the Falklands War.
