Royal Navy submarines attack German and Italian supply routes in the Mediterranean
The Mediterranean was one of the most successful operational areas for the Submarine Service during World War Two. British submarines patrolled throughout various parts of the region, based at locations such as Alexandria and Gibraltar. The boats attacked the main lines of communication and supply routes supporting the German and Italian war effort in North Africa. However, Axis minefields, aircraft and anti-submarine ships were a constant threat to the boats. Over half of the submarines involved in the campaign were lost.
