The O Class submarines had a larger battery capacity and more powerful engines to enable them to cover long distances. The boats could theoretically dive to 500 feet, though none formally tested beyond 300 feet. Their armament consisted of eight 21 inch torpedo tubes and one four inch gun. The boats were of a saddle tank type with fuel carried in rivited external tanks, although these tanks proved vulnerable to leaking after depth charge damage. The O class also became the first British submarines to be fitted with Asdic and VLF radio, received at periscope depth.
