Preparations for war

Article Highlights

Grampus Class

These were the first class of purpose-built minelaying submarines. The first boat built was HMS Porpoise in 1932, with several more constructed in the late 1930s. The mines were stored in a special gallery with a conveyor belt built into the outer casing. The need for this specialised type of submarine disappeared after torpedo tubes were eventually put into use for minelaying.
