North Sea Campaign

U Boat threat

The first instance of a German submarine demonstrating its capabilities in war occurred on 22nd September 1914. The German submarine U9 torpedoed and sank the Royal Navy cruiser HMS Aboukir. HMS Hogue and HMS Cressy also accompanied the ship, and Hogue returned to the aid of the sinking cruiser. U9 also torpedoed this ship. Cressy then attempted to rescue the crews of the other two ships, but U9 then also attacked her. Over 1400 men were lost in the incident. U9 demonstrated the impact that just one lone submarine could have.
