World War Two

Kalafrana received its first bombs of World War Two in June 1940, which included a direct hit on the north slipway.

Sunderland flying boats of 228 squadron were based at Kalafrana in 1940-41 - they had regular contact with enemy fighters.

During this time a rescue flight was based at Kalafrana consisting of a Walrus flying boat and a float-equipped Swordfish,  their job was to rescue downed aircrews.

After February 1943 there were no more raids from enemy aircraft, so the base became much quieter.

Kalafrana was transferred from RAF to the Royal Navy in June 1946. There is no further record of it being used after this date.
