Post Falklands career

Tall received a promotion to Commander in December 1982. He served as officer in charge of the submarine tactics and weapons group at Faslane and became highly regarded in tactical development.

He underwent various refresher courses before returning to sea service to command his old vessel HMS Churchill. Tall was skilled in forming good relationships with his crew and proved himself to be a popular Captain. Tall next commanded the Resolution class HMS Repulse in 1990.

His brother, David, was also in the submarine service. David was Commander of HMS Resolution at the same time as Jeff was Commanding Officer of Repulse. They were the first pair of brothers to ever simultaneously command nuclear submarines.

His next post was as Fleet Trials Officer on the Chief in Command Atlantic Fleet Staff. He received the OBE for this role.

Tall then worked as the Royal Navy Liaison Officer to the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Centre (AUTEC) between 1992 and 1994, based on Andros Island in the Bahamas.

AUTEC supported aspects of undersea warfare by providing the research, development, test and evaluation requirements for the US Navy. It also helped to assess the Navy's training, tactical and material readiness.

On leaving the Navy Tall became Director of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, Hampshire. He retired in 2008.
