'They lined us up, told us the war was over. They lined us up and said we weren't to celebrate, but the war is over and at once the restrictions were cut out and the sick went to a hospital in Makassar and, what happened, oh yes, that’s right, the Australians flew over us in aeroplanes, when the war was over, and they dropped different things in the camp to ask us what we wanted. Did we want food? Did we want clothes? Did we want something else or something else, and we somehow got our, what do you call him? Our semaphore man, the signal man on board, to signal back to them what we wanted, and we wanted food. And they brought in flights and different things of food you see.'
