The British Empire Medal (BEM) rewarded both civilians and military personnel for 'meritorious service'.

The recipient was still entitled to wear the BEM if promoted to a higher grade of the Order of the British Empire.

The BEM replaced the Medal of the Order of the British Empire for Meritorious Service in December 1922.

The medal no longer forms part of the British honour system.

The medal is silver and has a red ribbon with three vertical, grey stripes.
