All full-time personnel of the armed services who served for at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945 qualified for this medal.

Individuals received it in addition to any World War Two campaign stars and the Defence Medal.

Some civilians, such as war correspondents and ferry pilots who had flown in war zones, also qualified.

The medal is cupro nickel.

The ribbon has a narrow red stripe in the centre, with a narrow white stripe on either side with broad blue and red stripes at either edge.
