Medal facts -  

  • All full-time personnel of the armed services who served for at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945 qualified for this medal.

  • Individuals received it in addition to any World War Two campaign stars and the Defence Medal.

  • Some civilians, such as war correspondents and ferry pilots who had flown in war zones, also qualified.

  • The medal is cupro nickel.

  • The ribbon has a narrow red stripe in the centre, with a narrow white stripe on either side with broad blue and red stripes at either edge.
