King George V instituted the British War Medal in 1919 to mark the end of World War One and recognise those who served.

It was extended to 1920 to cover post war mine clearance and service in Russia.

Britain issued approximately 6 500 000 silver medals.

Around 110 000 bronze versions of this medal were issued to subjects of the British Empire and other foreign nationals who fought on the side of the British.

Its ribbon has an orange watered centre with stripes of white and black on each side and borders of royal blue.
