The introduction of the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) came about in October 1914.

Awards are eligible to petty officers and ratings of the Royal Navy, noncommissioned officers and other ranks of the Royal Marines, and all other persons holding corresponding ranks or positions in the naval forces.

The medal rewarded acts of bravery in the face of the enemy that did not sufficiently merit the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal.

A later extension covered Merchant Navy, Army, Women's Royal Naval Service and Royal Air Force personnel serving aboard ships in World War Two.

The 1993 Review of Gallantry Awards resulted in changes to the operational gallantry award system. The Distinguished Service Cross (DSC), which is available both to officers and other ranks, replaced the DSM.

It is a silver medal, with a dark blue ribbon with two white stripes towards the centre.
