Medal facts -

  • The Navy introduced the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (CGM) in 1855.

  • It awas the Naval equivalent to the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

  • The first recipients served in the Baltic and Crimea.

  • Nearly all awards of CGMs from 1901 onwards have had citations in the London Gazette.

  • The CGM included the Royal Air Force in 1943 to recognise gallantry whilst flying in operations against the enemy.

  • The Conspicuous Gallantry Cross replaced the CGM following a review in 1993.

  • The medal has a white ribbon with dark blue edges.
