Twiss POW Transcripts

Admiral Sir Frank Twiss describing sending and receiving letters whilst in Zentsuji prisoner of war camp

Transcript: "After about eighteen months in incarceration our names got back to England, I think through the visit of the Swiss or somebody to the camp and we managed I think to smuggle over to him a list of people who were in the camp. So for the first time one’s family at home heard that although you’d been missing for some time you were still alive. We were then permitted to write 25 words a month on a postcard which was better than nothing at all and so we used to write home and occasionally you’d get a letter of 25 words back from your family which made a tremendous difference."
