Twiss POW Transcripts
Admiral Sir Frank Twiss describing forced labour in the Zentsuji prisoner of war camp
Transcript: Work was all such of things that the Japanese invented. I worked for some little time with a sort of pick-axe thing digging up hard tennis courts in the local naval or military club in order to plant vegetables in it. I also worked at, I think because I got into some trouble, I was given the pleasant job of emptying all the latrines with a bucket and a bamboo pole and a friend. So for quite a time I worked as a coolie at one end of a bamboo pole and it was alright because it was better to do that than sit about doing nothing. We didn’t get anything extra for it but we didn’t get anything less.
