Commander Iain Henderson comparing war in the Falklands and war in the Gulf. (RNM)
Transcript: “I mean the Falklands had lots and lots of ordnance being chucked around. We were on kind of on tenterhooks all the time – which in a way is worse than actually having a fight. At least in the Falklands, you knew each day that the air force was going to have a go at you. In the Gulf you were constantly waiting for it. And actually, being some 20 miles off the Kuwaiti coast with a whole load of weapons ranged against you, you had to be on your mettle 24 hours a day, and literally, you know, every second of the day. Whereas in the Falklands, you know, once the Argentinians had gone home for the night – the Argentinian Air Force – then you knew you were pretty safe ‘til the following morning. So, it was almost psychological warfare.”
