Rupert Lonsdale

Captain of the submarine HMS Seal held captive in a German POW camp during World War Two

Rupert Lonsdale joined the Submarine Service in 1927 and, after embarking on his initial training, he undertook general service in the fleet. In 1939 he became captain of the submarine HMS Seal.

In 1941, during World War Two, HMS Seal ventured into an area of the North Sea, known as the Kattegat where a German minefield damaged the vessel. A German seaplane took Rupert Lonsdale and his crew prisoners of war and they spent much of their time in captivity at a camp called Marlag.
