Submarines at Fleet Reviews

Article Highlights

When do fleet reviews take place?

By the 20th century the Navy mounted Royal Naval reviews to mark the crowning of a new monarch or to celebrate the 25th or 50th anniversary of their coronation. In 1977 Queen Elizabeth II held the last review of this type during her Silver Jubilee year. In 2002, however, the Queen decided not to hold a Naval Review in her Golden Jubilee year because she considered it would be too expensive.

The monarch has also reviewed the fleet to mark such occasions as the presentation of Colours to the Royal Navy and to celebrate victories in war. In 1969 the Queen reviewed an international fleet to celebrate 20 years of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). The most recent fleet review occurred in 2005 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.
