Communications
Sending and receiving signals and information has always been an essential part of how the navy operates. Ships need to communicate with each other and to bases ashore so that they can manoeuvre and fight effectively. They also need to order supplies and other day-to-day requirements.
The equipment and methods used to send and receive these signals has, over time, become more sophisticated and technology based. And although traditional methods such as flags and lamps are still used, the introduction of modern methods such as computers and satellite communications have made the process much faster, more efficient and more secure.
