Sessions with Effie
Using their Monday morning art class as a structure free-lance artist Effie Coe worked with the students on a series of sessions. The aim of the sessions was to explore different media and art techniques and to transform what they had learned at the museum into their own final pieces.

Effie had produced worksheets with different elements of the posters shown to them at the museum for the children to explore. The Royal Naval Museum had also produced A0 copies of some of posters highlighting different styles and techniques in order to inspire the students when back in the classroom.

The structure for these sessions went as follows:

Art techniques
Effie felt that it would be important to teach them some painting techniques in the first session. This enabled the students to use their media more expressively. She focused on the different ways that they could paint the sea using different effects from thick, broad brush strokes to watered down thin layers of different colours, as you can see below:

At the end of the session, their teacher gave the class homework. The students had to think about what the Royal Navy do today and how they would want to incorporate it into their own propaganda item.

They were given official websites of the Royal Navy to look at and asked to think about how the Royal Navy works to help the environment, stop drug trafficking, provide humanitarian aid and attract people to join.

Brainstorming session
Building on the homework their teacher had given them Effie encouraged the students to brainstorm and sketch ideas for their own poster.

Beginning to create the final piece
Now the students were able to begin to produce their own propaganda posters. The students were also encouraged to use different mediums in addition to paint. Some students used mixtures of fabric and collage in their work as well as using images that they had created on the computer.

All day art session
Effie was able to work with the students in a whole day session as part of the school’s Activity Week. Here the students were able to work on their final pieces for an extended amount of time.

Finishing off session
The last session was a chance for the students to finish off their final pieces of work. If the children had time, they also had the opportunity to make short stop-animation films with a naval theme.
