Green's early career

The Royal Naval School of Music Bombardon Bass and Euphonium Class, Eastney 1905. Notable band members include A C Green, later Assistant Musical Director of the Royal Naval School of Music, S. Fairfield, later Musical Director and W E Faithful, the first RNSM Band Boy to be commissioned. (RMM)
Arthur Charlett Green was born in Shoreditch, London on October 9 1888. He enlisted in the Royal Marines Band Service at the London recruiting branch on 19 November 1904 aged 16.
Although Green claimed that he was a pianist he would later play the Bombardon Bass and the Double Bass for the Royal Marine Band Service, exhibiting his talent in both military and orchestral music.

Green's first draft was in the band of HMS Renown in 1905 for the Prince of Wales' Royal Tour of India. Before World War One he also served on board HMS Queen, HMS Jupiter, HMS Bacchante and the Admiralty Yacht HMS Enchantress, entertaining the First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill.
In 1913 Green received the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, a medal given to the most distinguished student, and a precursor to his later achievements.
