The spark

On the evening of the 4 November 1906 appalling weather made the Sunday inspection difficult. After the inspection there was some delay in dismissing the men. It began to rain heavily. Some of the ratings, mostly young Stokers and engineer ratings, began to complain in murmurs. Believing they should muster in the nearby Gymnasium, the complaints grew and some of the bolder spirits broke rank and fled for cover. The main body of men, many of who began shouting, immediately followed this.
