Memories of service life

HMS Fulmar Wrens

The Wrens serving at HMS Fulmar created a scrapbook to document their social lives and sporting achievements, dating from 1950 to 1961. It includes photographs of the Wrens at work, social functions and sports events, as well as the visits of Senior Officers and parades. It creates a good sense of what life was like for women serving in the WRNS in the immediate post war period.

HMS Fulmar II was a former Royal Air Force base located near Milltown in Scotland from 1946-1972. It became the largest Naval Air Station in Scotland. The airfield returned to the RAF in September 1972.

42 Commando Royal Marine Wrens

Women's Royal Naval Service personnel served with the 42 Commando Royal Marines during their Northern Ireland tour from 15th May to 17th November 1978. The Wrens helped provide administrative support to the corps.

The photo album of the Wrens of 42 Commando highlight the close knit community that can form amongst a small team of WRNS personnel, especially when they are stationed away from home. The Wren personnel included Wren Di Marshall, Leading Wren Jo Patrick, Wren Sally Bubbins, Third Officer Sherry Jeary, Wren Jan Miller, Wren Linda Graham and Wren Karen Greaves.
