Fleet Air Arm Wrens

Article highlights

Radio Mechanics

A few WRNS ratings trained as Radio Mechanics in early 1941. The institution of the category really began in May 1942 with the formation of the Naval branch of Radio Mechanics.

There were arrangements for WRNS and naval personnel to take the same courses. Trainees learnt RDF and Wireless Telegraphy, specialising in one or the other, at this period.

They entered either the Radio Mechanic, ARM or AWM category, on completion of training. Completion of the course allowed ratings to become Leading Wrens. Advancement to Petty Officer Wren was also possible.

HMS Ariel became the training establishment for Radio Mechanics by the end of 1942.

A few Wren radio mechanics were employed at the ports servicing ship's Wireless Telegraphy sets during 1941 and 1942, but the majority were employed at FAA stations.

The radio mechanics AWM were capable of servicing the W/T sets carried by all planes coming into their station and the Radio Mechanics ARM undertook similar service for Radar sets.

They tested sets and carried out repairs either in the plane or in the workshops. Wren Radio Mechanics also had the chance to fly aircraft. They would take test flights in order to operate the kit that they had repaired.

WRNS ratings had worked at naval air stations on maintenance and ordnance duties since 1942. The tremendous expansion of the FAA during 1943 created another large and important demand for WRNS personnel.

There was an increase in complements of existing RNAS and many new stations also created. WRNS air categories formed during 1942 were developed with new and responsible jobs given to WRNS personnel, especially officers.
