Robert Tharle was born on 30 January 1885 in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. He worked as a labourer prior to joining the Royal Navy. He volunteered for service on 22 October 1900 and commenced service on 30 January 1903 for a period of 12 years. He served on board 12 different ships and establishments. He died whilst serving on HMS Southampton on 31st May 1916 during the Battle of Jutland.

The Battle of Jutland was the largest naval battle of World War One, involving the German High Seas Fleet and the Royal Navy. The battle occurred from 31 May to 1 June 1916 in the North Sea off the coast of Denmark.

Tharle left behind his wife, Florence Annie Tharle, who went on to serve as a cook in the Women's Royal Naval Service during World War Two.
